Our keynote speakers:

Professor Monroe Price, director of the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, amongst many other positions. His recent work includes co-editing Owning the Olympics: Narratives of the New China (University of Michigan Press, 2008) and authoring Media and Sovereignty: The Global Information Revolution and its Challenge to State Power. (MIT, 2002)

Dr. Des Freedman, Senior Lecturer in Communications and Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths University of London, author of The Politics of Media Policy (Polity Press, 2008)

Dr. Karin Wahl-Jorgensen, Reader at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University, author of Journalists and the Public (Hampton Press, 2006)

Over 20 presentations by postgraduate students from Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Iran, Turkey, Macau, Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, Scotland, Spain, South Africa, Ukraine, USA, Phillipines, and many others, will take place in six panel sessions. For postgraduate students presenting or attending the conference we also offer a workshop by the Leeds University Staff and Departmental Development Unit, featuring Prof. David Hesmondhalgh, on Thursday 11th June 4 to 5pm.

We will also feature a special screening of the short docudrama “Do it Like a European“, produced by the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence, as well as a thematic art installation by graduate students of the University of Leeds‘ School of Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies.


If you would like to attend the conference, please send your name, institutional affiliation and e-mail addres to ics-pg-conference@leeds.ac.uk by June 5th, 2009. There is no registration fee and the conference is open to all.
